What is a 'septic mound'?

A septic mound is designed specifically for use in areas where traditional septic systems cannot be effectively installed due to poor soil conditions. This solution elevates the septic system above ground in a contained, engineered mound that allows for proper drainage and treatment of wastewater.

In cases where the soil is not capable of adequately filtering and absorbing effluent from a conventional septic tank — such as in clay soils, high groundwater tables, or limited space — the mound system provides a way to effectively manage sewage. By utilizing a raised bed of sand and soil, the mound creates a larger surface area for the effluent to be treated through natural biological processes before it eventually reaches the groundwater.
